 2023 Preview 


       Holy Spirit finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Holy Spirit finished eighth in Class 1A region five with a 1-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       Holy Spirit took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2017. The Saints lost as many games as in any season since 2015. The Saints have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023.

       Holy Spirit was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Saints want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.7 points a game.

       Holy Spirit struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 39.3 points a game.

       The Saints would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-9 record. Since 2010, the Holy Spirit football program has struggled with a record of 21-79.

       Over the past 16 seasons, Holy Spirit has managed to compile a record of 56-106. Their 35.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 1A and 319th in the AHSAA.




       The Saints are led by head coach Bobby Snyder who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Holy Spirit. The Saints saw improvement from a 0-0 record the season before coach Snyder arrived. The Saints have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Snyder. The Saints have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 60-55 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 1A and 151st in the AHSAA.

       This season, the Saints will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region five.

       The Saints open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Tuscaloosa Academy on Friday, August 25 at Arthur Howington Field. Last year the Tuscaloosa Academy Knights finished with an overall record of 10-3 and in second place in Class 2A region five. The Knights lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 2A playoffs to Fyffe by a score of 35-7.

       Holy Spirit and Tuscaloosa Academy have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Saints have a 0-2-0 record against the Knights. They last met in 2022 with Tuscaloosa Academy winning by a score of 45-12.
